Join Us

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society recruits singers throughout the year. Members of all faiths are welcome. If you would like to sing with the choir, please contact us to organise an audition.

The Audition Process

You will be asked to sit in on a regular Wednesday night rehearsal. During the break, our Musical Director will ask you to sing some scales to determine your vocal range and ability. Ability to read music and sight-sing is desirable but not essential. There is no audition fee.

If successful, you will be asked to come along to a number of rehearsals as a trial after which you will be asked to join the Society as a member and pay membership fees, presently $170 per year. Subsidy is available in cases of financial hardship and any requests will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals take place on most Wednesday nights 7.30 till 10pm in Sydney. There are additional rehearsals prior to performances if required. The choir takes a summer break in December/January.

Performances

The choir maintains a regular performance schedule, performing at community events throughout the year and at our own concerts which usually take place on Sundays.

Repertoire

Our repertoire is varied and is selected on the basis of the nature of each performance from classical, opera, jazz and musicals, popular and folk music in many languages including English, Italian, Russian, Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew, Hebrew liturgical settings, and other Hebrew musical settings, some very unusual.

Commitment

Singing in the choir involves a commitment to regularly attend rehearsals and learn repertoire. However, we don’t expect our singers to sing in every concert. We ask that choristers commit to 80% of the year’s activities and that no more than three rehearsals are missed in a program.
